EARLIEST DOCUMENT OF JURRIAEN (GEORGE) PROBATSKI:

Interview with the West-Indische Compagnie

Dated 30 July 1643, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

by Nora J. Probasco

The following is a copy of an interview with George (Jurriaen) Probatski by a Master Blacksmith on July 30, 1643 in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. This proves that Jurriaen (George) Probatski was in Brazil as of this date. Jurriaen was one of five smiths in Recife at the time. This document was found in the Nationaal Archief at Den Haag in the Netherlands. It was part of the West-Indische Compagnie (WIC) records housed there.

NL-HaNA_OWIC 1.05.01.01, inv.nr.58

The cataloguer mistakenly identified George Probatchi as the Master Blacksmith, but this was incorrect as he is being interviewed by the Master Blacksmith.
